The Meat of Original Nature
They went to The Bahamas
Sugar coated
The couple packed the truck
Two white T-Shirts bobbing and weaving in and out of the house, the garage, the truck bed
I poked my head through the window to check on them and saw their eyes dancing playfully with promise and cheer, so happy to be beginning a new adventure
The promise
of getting away
of doing something new
of freeing themselves from the monotony of days
A small part of me envied them but only for a split second
Then I breathed a sigh of relief looking back at my notebooks and guitar
She hugged me
and I squeezed her tall thin body
I will miss her
Living with this woman has felt so good and so safe
I wave as they go
Then it’s noon time
Squirrels scatter in mating rituals up trees and back down
The dog gets stirred by their movement
a natural instinct
The tiny animal teases forth her desire
I think about it
What’s my squirrel?
What catches my instinct and urges me to move?
The scent of some song scattering it’s color in the darkness
The maraca of some dance shaking it’s hips and flirting it’s eyes
A pencil sitting in a streak of sunlight on the table
Goodness, in the eyes of someone struggling
Their power lost between waves of armor
that armor cracking and calling to move
My hands like paws chasing that sickness to pull it away with my teeth
To get at the meat
The meat of original nature
The sunlight of the soul
The pure dance of God in another
That may just be my squirrel
I am a cleaner
A servant
An artist
A dreamer
An idealist
Unendingly
and I’m learning how to WORK
Day by day
How to sit up in my life and work
How to use my instinct
My body and my
Jaws
To get at the meat
of
original nature
